Talking about Ads will take more than one post, and to tell you the truth; I do not like reading long posts either, so I am going to break it down to segments.
Here we go with the first one:
The Bad List
Before you start any business, it is a good practice to make a Good / Bad List of what you are getting out of that business, running ads on your blog is a business, you already know the good part of it (Money for blog upkeep for an example) but I should point out the Bad List ; and it is up to you to make up your mind and go with them:
- Clicking on ads will take visitors AWAY form your blog
The usual code that any ad agency will provide you to put on your blog does not alwasy contain // target=”_blank” // tag which tell the browser to open that ad in a new window, the result? Click and they are gone! And how many of us bother to click on the Back button to go back to your blog? …..Not many. So make sure that you put that tag in your ad code.
- You have no contorl over what ads will show up
Happens with the ad code that is purley Java script, you will have no control over which ads that script will put on your blog. Check the actual ad under ” Demo” or live ad” before you go with it.
- Paid Links
You will be tempted to put Links on your blog that are paid by some company (hence…they are Ads), they are Text Ad links that may or may not agree with the rest of your blog’s content. Some of them pay real good, BUT; they are A BIG NO NO with Google and the rest of search engines, and you do not want them to be mad at you! Use them at your own risk!
- Banner Exchange
Another form of ads, which they will sell you the idea behind them as ” Traffic Exchange” or “Traffic Boosters“, again… it is up to you to check them out and know if those banners have the same area of interest as your blog or not.
- Pop-Ups and Whole Page Intro Ads
You ‘ ve been there, and done that! And closed them everytime they appear, so I am not going over that again.
- Flash Ads
Not a good idea to great your visitors with, unless they are about something they might learn from.
That will give you a general idea on what to avoid when running ads on your blog. In the next segment, I’ll be talking about Ad Sources and companies, stay tuned!

This is terrific. I needed to know what kind of ads to put on my blog. I have Google but didn’t know if I should put something else on there too.

This is good advice. Thanks. reading through your list, I was nodding at how right you are on each point – particularly the “in a new page” linkages and pop-ups.
Write this up into an ebook or something… this stuff is Gold!
Thank you Percy, Good idea!
