You work hard on SEO Friendliness and you need those spiders to be happy and visit your site more often, so hard in fact that you might forget about us mere humans surfing for intersting sites on the web?
Let us start form the top:
- Flash Intro Page Unless you are a big known name like Sony ® or Walmart ®; or a web design firm trying to impress future customers; avoid this page. We like to be greeted with your home page and right to the point!
- Navigation ” Where am I” and ” Where I go from here” are questions we should never ask ourselfs on your site; you should put a navigation menu with 8 labels at most on the top of the page or to the left of your page code, remember Google Golden Triangle?
- Above the fold Is your bread and butter, Steak and potatos… or the most important part that we see as soon as your page loads in our browsers. Tell us why we should explore your site further, what makes it Unique.
- Main Content Using wide main content layout will make it hard for us to read your page, so we might skip a few lines…or even skip your site alltogether! Keep you paragraphs short and sweet
- white space Sprinkle it here and there, our eyes tire easly when we see a compacted page with tons of graphics or with a lot of flash banners: spammy to say the least, and we bounce right off.
- Footer OK, we scrolled all the way to the bottom, where is your “Back to Top of Page” ? And last but not the least:
- Contact We liked your site and want to get in touch with you to talk, do bussiness or whatsoever; Where is your Contact Us form/Page? Is it easy to find without guessing?

Great point about avoiding the flash intro pages. Some companies are so obsessed with having these, when all they do is deter a lot of people from visiting your site. There are still a lot of people out there with computers that don’t handle flash all that well — and that’s a whole segment that will just never come back to your site because it took too long to load.
Thank you Blendetta for pointing out Page Loading Time… you can make that possible if you follow a few of those tips.
I can not recall how many web sites I skipped when I saw that “Intro Page” with Click to enter site at the buttom!
